Owning a dog will cost you a pretty penny. We crunched the numbers and found that it could add up to almost $11,000 on average over the course of your pup’s lifespan. Ouch. But when you really want a furry friend, it may be hard to see dollar signs instead of dog treats.

A few things to consider? The cost of the dog based on its breed and size. You could end up saving some serious dough by adopting or purchasing a small dog instead of a big one. Plus, what you end up paying for Fido could be completely based on his breed and how long he lives.

Big dogs can cost a lot of money.

According to a 2018 study conducted by GoBankingRates.com, the most expensive dog breed is a Tibetan Mastiff. If you’re a fan of this big, fluffy dog, then you can expect to pay an average of $2,500 if purchasing her from a breeder. Adoption fees, on the other hand, may vary, which could save you some money.

Additionally, the study found that the average cost of grooming for a Tibetan Mastiff is $70 per visit. Plus, this type of dog typically lives between 10 and 14 years, with common medical issues like such as hip and elbow dysplasia that can also rack up another $3,000.

Based on how much we found it costs to own a dog on average, factoring in the increase in monthly grooming price and health care needs, owning a large Tibetan Mastiff could cost between $17,000 and $24,000, depending on how long the dog lives.

Little dogs are more affordable.

GoBankingRates.com did a second study in 2018 to determine the least expensive dog breeds, and although the top dog isn’t little, the second most affordable breed on the list is: a Rat Terrier. This dog is a toy breed, which means he’s small. Because of that, purchasing this type of dog only costs an average of $350, though he could be even more affordable if you choose to adopt.

Additionally, the study found that a Rat Terrier’s medical costs are pretty low, with an average cost of $1,500 for his common health issues. Grooming is also affordable at about $25 per visit. The only thing that could cause the cost to go up is his life expectancy — Rat Terriers tend to live between 15 and 18 years, which is longer than the average lifespan of a dog (11 years and three months).

Based on our average cost of a dog, factoring in the decreases in grooming price and health care needs, owning a small Rat Terrier could cost between $15,000 and $19,000, depending on how long the dog lives.
