Enjoy A 360-Degree View Of The Indian Ocean From This South African Houseboat
What if you could experience the serenity that comes with being surrounded by water without joining a noisy cruise? This houseboat, permanently anchored in the Knysna Lagoon on the Western Cape of South Africa, lets you do just that. For $41 a night per person, you and three of your friends can stay at this adorable little wooden cottage on the water.
Don’t worry — you won’t have to swim to get to this Airbnb. The hosts provide guests with a dinghy boat to get to and from the houseboat, and they even teach you how to operate it. The dinghy and the houseboat are entirely yours for the duration of your stay.
This unique Airbnb has two bedrooms (each equipped with one double bed), one bathroom that guests can share and a fully-loaded kitchen so you can make your own meals while looking out on the beautiful lagoon. The houseboat also has an outdoor patio with a BBQ grill. Flippin’ burgers on the water? Doesn’t get much better than that. And if you get bored of your secluded cottage, popular hotspot Knysna Waterfront is just a 2-minute dinghy ride away.
Amenities include:
- Two bedrooms with two double beds
- One bathroom
- One fully-equipped kitchen with cooking essentials (i.e. pots and pans)

Here’s how to make this dream vacation a reality:
If you live in the United States, it’ll take you some time to get to this dreamy houseboat, but it’ll be worth the trek. The closest airport to your destination is Plettenberg Bay Airport, which is about a 30-minute drive from the Airbnb. But you have to take three flights to get there from most major U.S. cities.
First, fly from the States to Europe (either to England or France). From there, hop on another flight to Cape Town International Airport, a larger airport located in South Africa’s capital. Once you’re in South Africa, take one last flight to Plettenberg Bay Airport. From there, either rent a car or take a taxi for the quick drive to the houseboat. The Airbnb’s hosts will be waiting for you to take you aboard with the dingy boat.
So friends, when are we going?
