Health Tip Of The Day: Happy 4th! Here’s how to eat meat every day without it wrecking your health.

Instagram influencers and fitness experts alike tout the benefits of a plant-based diet. And you’ve probably already heard that eating meat every day isn’t ideal for your health. But if your dreams at night include visions of brisket, burgers and bacon, what should you do? Here are three things to keep in mind if you’re looking to eat meat every day while still staying healthy.

1. Not all meat is created equal.

Red meat and processed meats (think anything behind the deli counter) have a lot of saturated fat and overdoing saturated fat on a daily basis puts you at risk of developing cholesterol problems and heart issues down the line. So you should aim to eat these two types of meat no more than three times a week. You can get away with eating lean meats, like skinless chicken and turkey, more often because they do not contain nearly as much saturated fat.

2. Focus on the protein-to-fat ratio.

Lean in to lean meat options (like grilled chicken) that are high in quality protein and low in fat. A 4-ounce piece of grilled chicken, for example, can provide half of your daily protein needs while also keeping the calories down and the fat reasonable.

3. The bottom line.

If you want to maintain a healthy diet while cutting out meat, just follow this simple guideline from the American Heart Association: Consume no more than 6 ounces of meat-based protein a day and vary your sources to reap all the nutritional benefits you can. Keep in mind that a 6-ounce serving is about two times the size of your palm. Click through for more advice on healthy meat-eating. [Swirled]
