Anyone who has a fascination with restaurants that explore uncharted territory should take two hours and watch  “Noma, My Perfect Storm,” a documentary currently streaming on Netflix. The food doc, which debuted in 2015, follows the world-renowned Danish chef René Redzepi as he reinvents his restaurant, Noma, to become the best in the world.

The cinematography for “Noma, My Perfect Storm” is, by far, its most fascinating element. Director Pierre Deschamps captures every single dish in crisp and clear view with all of the bright greens and deep shades of purple and pink up front and center. The close-ups and slow-motion shots force your eyes to pay attention to the intensity that goes into creating dishes for a restaurant of such a high caliber.

Noma basically invented the concept of New Nordic cuisine, with a focus on cooking what’s in season and foraging for ingredients. The award-winning restaurant took Copenhagen, Denmark to an entirely new level as a pioneering food destination, with tremendous respect from chefs, restaurant critics and curious diners around the world.

The Netflix documentary spans the course of a few years with Redzipi, shining the spotlight on his personal life with access to his kitchen and family. You’ll see the blood, sweat and tears that come with making a restaurant number one in the world.

The documentary captures what it’s like to lose the title of “best restaurant” and what it takes to earn it back. The film is about taking risks and using your failures to succeed and drive you forward. The documentary compares chefs to artists, athletes and musicians, all while shedding light on the insanely detailed artistry that this type of cooking demands. It’s an eye-opening film for anyone who loves exploring new restaurants and cuisines.

While the original Noma in Copenhagen closed its doors in 2017, Redzepi brought Noma to Mexico soon thereafter for a pop-up series last summer, shocking the culinary world even more than ever before. Now there’s a Noma 2.0 in Copenhagen with a 20-course menu. The newest Noma continues to disrupt everything we ever thought we knew about food — in the best way possible.
