What Science Says: Although most of us can agree that a nice long bubble bath sounds a lot dreamier than a quick rinse in the shower, the latter is still the most common form of bathing worldwide. Sure, drawing a bath and soaking in it can take a lot more time than simply hopping in the shower, but when you take into account the major mental and physical benefits that come with bathing, that extra time is totally worth it. In a study published in the journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, participants reported feeling less stressed, less fatigued and more pain-free after only bathing for two weeks compared to how they felt after only showering for two weeks. Subjects also reported that the bathing period reduced their skin conditions giving them softer, smoother skin. Researchers believe that these benefits stem from the hyperthermic action of warm baths, which increases body temperature, stimulates the metabolism and eliminates metabolic waste products — ultimately causing you to feel refreshed.
Why It Matters: Taking an extra hour out of your day to hop in a bath rather than rinsing off in the shower could seriously boost your mood and help you de-stress after a long day. But even if you don’t have a bathtub there are ways to up the relaxation factor of your shower — play some relaxing music, use a shower bomb (yes, they do exist), dim the bathroom lights or light a scented candle.
