With Robots Cooking, The Death Of Kitchens Could Be Closer Than We Think

There are four words no chef wants to hear: robots in the kitchen.

Robot waiters were the first step, but as technology continues to advance, there’s a chance we might see them replace all chefs at some point in the future. According to Barron’s, UBS analysts have suggested that with robots cooking and industrial kitchens looking to lower preparation costs, the need for restaurants could become obsolete by 2030.

If robots eventually replace chefs, dishwashers, food runners and servers, that extra service cost factored into your dining bill will decrease significantly. UBS estimates that ordering in from a restaurant could end up being less expensive than cooking at home.

When you factor in all of the costs that come with making your own meals and compare that number to the cost of a robot, which has been programmed to maximize efficiency in the kitchen, this all makes perfect sense. In fact, it makes way too much sense, and it’s borderline terrifying if you’re someone who loves to eat out.

Home cooking is already becoming a thing of the past among millennials, thanks to delivery services like Uber Eats and GrubHub. According to Business Insider, millennials are three times more likely to order in than their parents are, which means delivery numbers are only going to continue to grow. Technology has not only made ordering easier, but also made preparation, cooking and delivery more efficient so restaurant owners can feel more confident knowing that their customers are receiving a higher quality meal delivery experience.

It’s hard to believe that robots will ever be able to replace the joy we get from genuine hospitality. And don’t get us started on the massive unemployment issue that could result from robots replacing all of the humans who keep our favorite restaurants afloat.

Honestly, we’ll remain skeptical of this tech takeover until the day comes that a robot can make a soup that tastes exactly like grandma’s classic recipe.
