Plastic straws are on their way out (so long, non-biodegradable waste clogging up landfills and making marine life sad) and companies worldwide are trying to come up with plans to keep our sipping game strong. Enter Kellogg’s. Riding on some straw buzz, the cereal company is bringing back their discontinued Froot Loop Straws for a limited time at the Kellogg’s NYC Cafe starting August 6.

So, how did we get here? Well, sometimes, in tweets, there is truth. And that was the case when Twitter user Alex Hughesie tweeted a gem of an idea relating to the early aughts’ favorite cereal creation — Froot Loops Straws.

“Since we’re starting to become more environmentally savvy and ditching plastic straws, may I recommend bringing these bad boys back,” he tweeted. From there, the idea took flight.

There’s now a petition on Change.org begging for the snack to hit shelves again. And just take a guess of how many Froot fans have signed? At the time of writing, the list was at 12,684. That’s nearly 13,000 people feeling the pull of nostalgia for a cereal item discontinued in 2009.

Change.org petitioner Hannah Wade started the movement, addressing the pitch directly to Froot Loop maker Kellogg’s. “Bringing back Fruit Loops Cereal Straws would bring joy to my generation and generations to come,” she wrote on the petition page.

And that seriously made some cereal magic happen. Starting this week, you can slurp up some cereal milk goodness through a Froot Loop Straw at the Kellogg’s NYC Cafe. The cafe gives you free reign to a cereal bar, with Froot Loops, Frosted Flakes and Rice Krispies that you can then mix with marshmallows, sprinkles and whipped cream. And now, if you so please, a Froot Loop Straw. It’s the last addition you need to make your creation Instagram-ready — oh yeah, there’s a photo station at the cafe, too. Gotta ‘gram those childhood cereal vibes!
