Health Tip of the Day: You can eat certain foods to alter your mood for the better.

What Science Says: If you’re having trouble focusing or if you’re feeling irritated for no reason, eating certain foods can help you change your mindset. According to research done in nutritional psychiatry, a branch of science that studies the impact that what we eat has on our mood and mental health, certain nutrients and foods can alter your mood in a very specific way and almost immediately after you consume them.

How It Works: Are you feeling distracted at work? Adjust your focus and clear your mind by eating a salad or smoothie filled with leafy greens — we’re talking kale, collard greens and spinach. These foods are rich in vitamins and antioxidants (like vitamin K, for instance) that have been found to boost mental clarity and even slow the rate of cognitive decline. On the other hand, if you’re looking to boost your confidence before an interview, you should eat foods high in vitamin C like berries, oranges, lemons, limes and bell peppers. Researchers have found that upping your intake of vitamin C-rich foods can improve your mood and it could even reduce your anxiety. No more annoying jitters! [mindbodygreen]
