5 Of The Craziest Beach Parties In The World
With August just around the corner, you might be looking to plan your next beach trip with your crew. But if you’re sick of taking the same old trip to Coney Island or the shore, we’re here to help you spice things up. Kick it up a notch and plan a trip to one of the five craziest beach parties in the world. Even if you’re not a party gal, we bet that the beautiful sunset views and cerulean water will still tempt you.
1. InMusic Festival
When it is: It takes place annually in late June over the course of two to three days. The next InMusic Festival will be on June 24, 2019.
Where it happens: Zagreb, Croatia. The festival takes place on Youth Island, an island in the middle of Zagreb’s Lake Jarun.
Event details: This is Croatia’s biggest open-air music festival. The massive beach party first came about in 2006 and has featured the likes of Florence + The Machine, Kings of Leon, Massive Attack and the Pixies. In 2013, the festival made CNN’s list of the 50 greatest music festivals in the world.
Music: The festival accommodates most music tastes with an eclectic mix of reggae, indie rock, heavy metal, folk, hip-hop and electronica.
Main attraction: If you’re looking for a more upscale festival experience, you’ll appreciate that InMusic Festival’s camping spots offer WiFi and hot showers. The camping grounds are located on two nearby islands also situated on Lake Jarun — Trešnjevka Island and Univerzijada Island.
Since the venue has a 25,000-person capacity, this festival is perfect for first-timers who want to enjoy the music without being squished up against wasted strangers.
Cost: A general admission ticket will cost you 368 kn (Croatian Kuna), or $57. If you’re looking to camp on site rather than stay at a nearby hotel or Airbnb, you can add on a camping pass for an additional $41.
2. Full Moon Party
When it is: The celebration happens monthly on every full moon evening according to the Lunar Calendar. The next party will be on July 29, 2018, at dusk ’til the afternoon of the next day (July 30, 2018).
Where it happens: Ko Pha-ngan, Thailand. This island in Thailand has become world-famous specifically because it hosts the Full Moon Party. The party is held on the peninsular beach area and town of Haad Rin, which is located on the southern tip of Ko Pha-ngan.
Event details: The party first came about in 1988 when a group of 20 to 30 tourists discovered that Ko Pha-ngan offered the most beautiful views of the full moon. Throughout the years, the party gained fame through word of mouth and now draws an average crowd of 5,000 to 30,000 people every month. At dusk on the day of the party, small tables are lined up on the beach and thousands of lamps are lit. Talk about dancing in the moonlight. The party takes place on the beach and in the beach’s multiple surrounding clubs.
Music: At the Full Moon Party, you can expect a variety of different music genres — everything from trance to drum and bass to reggae. If you’re a lover of pop or country, this party probably isn’t for you.
Main attraction: Other than music, you can expect to be entertained by jugglers and fire eaters performing throughout the night on the white sandy beach. You’ll probably get to enjoy an impromptu firework display as well. If drinking is your thing and you’re a brave soul, you can take advantage of the free “buckets” of alcohol that line the beach. These buckets are said to contain a mixture of whiskey, ice, Coke (the drinking kind) and Red Bull.
Cost: You’ll have to pay an entrance fee of one hundred baht on the day of the party, which equates to less than $4. For safety reasons, it’s strongly recommended that you get a room at a hotel or Airbnb on the island instead of sleeping on the beach the night of the party (if you plan to sleep at all). A night at a hotel on Haad Rin beach will cost you 500 baht a night, or $15.
3. Ultra Music Festival
When it is: The outdoor festival takes place yearly over the course of a weekend, usually in March. The next Ultra Music Festival will span from Friday, March 29, 2019, to Sunday, March 31, 2019.
Where it happens: The festival is held in downtown Miami, Florida. Specifically, it takes place in Bayford Park facing the North Atlantic Ocean.
Event details: Founded in 1999, the festival typically has up to 165,000 attendees. Ultra offers festival-goers access to seven stages with performances by world-renowned EDM DJs. Last year’s lineup included Afrojack, Axwell, The Chainsmokers and Hardwell. In 2011, it won International Dance Music Award’s Best Music Event.
Music: Mostly electronic dance music with a hint of pop. This festival attracts big names like David Guetta, Azealia Banks, Benny Benassi and other world-renowned DJs.
Main attraction: If you like to get low on the dance floor, this is the music festival for you. Ultra Music Festival aligns well with Miami’s upscale party vibe and, given that most of the DJs attending this event have highly danceable music, you can expect this experience to be similar to that of attending one giant outdoor club.
Cost: General admission tickets start at $300. Unlike other music festivals, Ultra does not offer camping. Your best bet will be to get a room at one of Miami’s many beachside hotels or to find an Airbnb that’s not too far from the festival grounds. If you stay somewhere that’s a hike and a half from the festival, you’ll hate yourself for having to pay for an Uber — or worse, drive — at the end of an exhausting day of dancing your face off.
4. Tomorrowland
When it is: The festival happens yearly, usually in July, and over the course of two consecutive weekends. This year, the first weekend of the massive party will run from Friday, July 20, 2018, to Sunday, July 22, 2018. The second weekend starts on Friday, July 27, 2018, and ends on Sunday, July 29, 2018. Pick the weekend that works best for you, or choose both if you’re looking to go really wild.
Where it happens: In Boom, Belgium, along the Rupel River. The festival takes place at De Schorre, a recreation area in the town of Boom that is completely rented out for the event.
Event details: Started in 2005, Tomorrowland is now one of the largest and most well-known music festivals in the world, with tickets usually selling out in under three minutes. On average, 360,000 people attend each year. The festival is so exclusive that it even has its own currency called Pearl. (one Pearl equates to $2.) You’ll be able to load up on Pearls with your festival bracelet in appointed stands around the festival grounds, so you’ll just pay with your bracelet and won’t have to carry around cash or a credit card.
Music: Exclusively live electronic dance music. You can expect a lineup of local and international DJs and a mixture of big-name, up-and-coming and relatively unknown artists.
Main attraction: It’s all about the music. The festival ground has multiple stages, meaning that you’ll have your pick of performances to watch with various DJs performing all at once. Tomorrowland is known for its big-name headliners and has featured artists like Armin van Buuren, Axwell and David Guetta over the years. You can also enjoy traditional food and drinks from countries all around the globe offered at multiple tents on the festival grounds.
Cost: General access for one weekend will cost you € 225 a ticket, or $263. You can buy tickets directly on the Tomorrowland site or use a third-party site like Viagogo if you’ve decided to go late and tickets are already sold out. If you’re looking to camp out on the festival grounds during your stay (which is advised), your cheapest option will be getting the Magnificant Greens Package, which gives you access to the general festival camping site where you can pick a spot to pitch your tent. Add the camping pass onto your general admission ticket, and the total will cost you € 290 a ticket, or $339. Remember to bring your own camping gear!
5. Lightning In A Bottle
When it is: This 5-day festival happens yearly in early summer. The next festival will be held from Wednesday, May 22, 2019, to Monday, May 27, 2019.
Where it happens: The festival is located in the central coast region of California. Specifically, it takes place in the Lake San Antonio Recreation Area in Bradley, California.
Event details: Going strong since 2000, this music festival stands out from others in that it aims to promote sustainability, personal health and creative expression. In addition to music performances, the event also features guest speakers, visual and interactive art installations, yoga classes and group meditation. In 2017, Lightning In A Bottle was nominated for Festival of the Year at the Electronic Music Awards.
Music: Other than electronic dance music, you can also expect devotional music, experimental music and folk music at this festival.
Main attraction: This festival is home to the biggest live painting event in the United States, the Do ArT Foundation’s Lightning in a Paintcan. If you’re secretly the next Picasso, or if you’re down to have a few laughs, you can volunteer to participate in the live painting as an artist.
Cost: General admission for a four-day festival pass will cost you $305. If you’re looking to camp on the festival grounds, you can choose from a car camping pass, an RV camping pass or from one of the three available tent camping packages.
Now, who’s ready to pack their (beach) bags?
