Guacamole Can Prevent You From Getting Too Drunk Too Fast

The summer days are long, so you need to keep that happy hour buzz going steady rather than crashing by the time the sun sets. And the best way to do that could be to dig into one of your favorite chip-and-dip combos as you order that first drink of the evening.

That’s right, guacamole has some seriously magical powers when it comes to keeping you happily tipsy. Small meals that are loaded with healthy fats (like our avocado friend) slow the rate at which your body absorbs alcohol. This doesn’t mean you don’t end up getting drunk at all, though. It simply means that you arrive at your intended destination gradually and more comfortably, making your evening out with your friends even more enjoyable.

If you’re not the biggest guacamole fan (sigh), a plate of fruit, cheese and olives can be a solid snacking option to share that achieves similar buzz-balancing results. A medley of bar nuts can also be extremely effective due to their unsaturated fat content and built-in portion control.

While these super satisfying appetizers will help you out big time, big meals can be surprisingly destructive. Eating too much too fast can over-activate your intestines, which will send you back to the original problem of absorbing alcohol too quickly. So keep the bites small, and snack throughout happy hour.

It’s also important to hydrate prior to margarita time to best avoid a hangover the following morning. And once you start drinking, down a glass of water in between each alcoholic beverage to stay balanced. Don’t worry — you’ll still feel the buzz. You’ll just avoid unwanted consequences later.

So go forth and enjoy all the chips, guacamole and margaritas your heart can handle this summer. Just eat a fair amount of the guac before you start sipping.
