What Not To Say To Someone After They Return From A Big Trip

Us travelers love to drone on and on about our adventures. We have a go-to travel story for just about everything. However, there are certain phrases that’ll set us off — either on the longest saga you’ll ever hear or a total travel rant.

So… how was it?

Unless it was the trip from absolute hell, the answer to this question is simple: “It was amazing.” End of story.

What was your favorite part?

Here’s the thing. There is no way to pick just one favorite part. There are two outcomes to this question. One, the traveler will stutter something about how “there are so many” and name a city that was fantastic. But you won’t get any real details. Two, you’ll hear a play-by-play of at least five of the highlights of the trip.

You’re so luckyyy.

Ignoring the trust fund babies who jet around on their parents’ dime, travel doesn’t just fall into your lap. It’s hard. It’s expensive. And sometimes it’s the opposite of glamorous — like taking red-eyee flights because they’re cheaper, sleeping in airports and trading the five-star restaurant for the grocery store.

Rich people aside, travel isn’t luck. It’s planning, prep and a taking the leap.

I wish I had your life.

Okay, you know what? You can say this one. Just be prepared for the inevitable four-hour PowerPoint presentation explaining exactly how you can live your own travel life. There’s nothing travel folks love more than evangelizing about how to get out there and explore the world.

Be prepared to hear about every method of budgeting, saving and pinching pennies into a travel fund. And then, friends, we buy the ticket. We don’t hesitate — we jump on that plane. (See the rant beginning?)
