Health Tip of the Day: Successfully Protect Your Eyes From The Glaring Sun This Summer By Choosing Sunglasses That Block Out No Less Than 100 Percent Of Both UVA and UVB Rays.

What Science Says: Sunny days are becoming more frequent and many of us are in the market for a new pair of shades. Getting the proper sunglasses is crucial for optimal eye health because too much UV radiation from the sun can cause real long and short-term problems for both your eyes and your eyesight. The two forms of UV radiation that we’re exposed to when we’re out in the sun are UVB and UVA rays. Too much exposure to UVB rays can cause cataracts, photokeratitis (a kind of sunburn of the cornea) and even eye cancer. UVA rays, on the other hand, can damage the retina of your eye which is crucial for forming proper visual images. So it’s important that you buy sunglasses that protect against both kinds of rays.

How To Choose The Right Sunglasses: When shopping for a new pair of shades this season, make sure that you buy a pair with a UV protection label that clearly states the sunglasses block out 100 percent of both UVA and UVB rays, anything less is a no-go. If you can’t find a UV protection label directly on the sunglasses that you’re looking to buy or in their online description, put them back on the rack — even if they’re super cute, the potential damage just isn’t worth it. Keep in mind that although polarized sunglasses are great at reducing glare from the sun, polarization does not make them better at blocking out UV rays. Those oversized frames, on the other hand, are the most effective at shielding your eyes from the sunshine because the larger surface area makes them better at blocking out harmful rays from every direction.
