How do you know a destination is getting some real levels of buzz? Google, of course. The search powerhouse recently released data on the most-searched locations of 2017.

Looking at the year in review, there were definitely parts of the world we sought out more than others – and not just for their wanderlust-inducing potential. With wonderful news mixed with controversial and tragic events, these were the most Googled travel destinations of 2017.

1. Las Vegas, Nevada, U.S.

In October, the inexplicable mass shooting in Las Vegas resulted in hundreds of injuries, 58 lost lives, stories of heroism and unspeakable tragedy.

2. Barcelona, Spain

An August terrorist attack shook Barcelona, where backlash against tourists is already a topic of international discussion – there are just too many of us who want to be in Spain’s artistic city, wandering along the beach, enjoying the gastronomy and marveling at La Sagrada Familia.

3. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, U.S.

A shooting put Myrtle Beach in the headlines in June, but the city on South Carolina’s coast also draws travelers’ interest for its beach vibes and the boardwalk.

4. Aspen, Colorado, U.S.

The mountains are calling to all of us, Colorado’s Rockies in specific. Everyone wants a piece of the crisp alpine air, ski slopes and music festivals.

5. Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

A vacation favorite for years, Punta Cana was pounded by hurricane season, but rebounded strong. The entire island is open for business and using tourist money to rebuild.

6. The Maldives

Anti-corruption protests in the cities and the famed serenity of the ocean-front huts kept the Maldives in our minds this year.

7. Turks and Caicos

Both Hurricane Maria and Hurricane Irma hit Turks and Caicos in September this year, however, the island has begun to recover and welcome visitors once again.

8. Bali, Indonesia

Bali was likely all over your Instagram feed this year, but it spiked in Google searches recently during Mount Agung’s volcanic eruption.

9. Cancun, Mexico

Cancun got some viral attention on both sides this year. The good? A dream job touring luxury resorts. The bad? The U.S. State Department warning travelers to avoid the area due to organized crime.

10. Bermuda

Spared from the devastation experienced by nearby destinations, Bermuda called to travelers with bright waters and even brighter cities.
