In Hong Kong, an upscale grocery and “mega lifestyle speciality” store called CitySuper that makes shopping at Whole Foods seem like a steal.
The market recently unveiled this single $22 Kotoka strawberry, packaged like a luxury good, “intended as a Valentine’s Day gift.”
The strawberry is advertised as delivered “fresh by air from Japan,” which undoubtedly contributed to its exorbitant price tag. The Kotoka, cultivated in the city of Nara, Japan, is described as a “rare” fruit with “a good acidity and rich sweetness.” A Time reporter who tasted the strawberry described it as “perfectly calibrated,” though “there are plenty of strawberries in the world that are just as good, and you can buy a one-pound carton of them for a fifth of the cost.”
CitySuper is also known for selling $64 melons and $522 apples, both of which are meant to be given as high-value, special occasion gifts. If you’ve got a taste for high-end foods but can’t make it to Japan, there’s always the $18 cup of coffee from this coffee shop in Brooklyn.
