Mark Bittman, the esteemed  cookbook author and former food columnist for The New York Times, is now a member of Columbia University. In his new role, Bittman will serve as a member of the department of health policy and management at the Mailman School of Public Health. In addition to teaching and advising graduate students, Bittman’s work will “complement the research efforts of the school’s Obesity Prevention Initiative as well as a new series of courses on food at Columbia College.”

“There isn’t an important issue in the world that you can’t link to public health,” Bittman said in a statement released by the university. “Climate change, food, agriculture, income inequality: Every issue that I care deeply about is united by public health.”

Donald Trump Sneaks Past Press to Grab Dinner at 21 Club

On Tuesday night, journalists waiting outside Trump Tower were disappointed to learn from his campaign that President-elect Donald Trump would not leave the premises for the rest of the evening. The practice, known as a “lid,” was issued by a spokesperson at 6:14pm. Then, roughly an hour later, reporters realized that Trump was indeed out and about when they watched a massive motorcade pull away from Trump Tower. It was unclear where he was headed until a patron at New York’s famous 21 Club tweeted a photo of Trump at the restaurant. He was joined by his children, including Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner.

Meanwhile, a restaurant in Iowa City, Iowa, is feeling pretty bitter about the election results. This past Saturday, a burger joint called Stella put discrimination in action with a doubled cover charge for anyone who voted for Trump ($5 for Clinton voters, $10 for Trump voters). A sign on the door read, “Yes, this is discrimination, but you voted for it.” A slew of one-star reviews on the restaurant’s Yelp page indicates that customers were less than happy about it.

On Thursday, November 17, former El Rey chef Gerardo Gonzales opens Lalo, a 50-seat Mexican restaurant with a vibrant, worldly menu. Lalo takes the place of Winnie’s, a historic Chinatown karaoke bar that closed in 2015. On the menu: carnitas with corn nuts and white sauce served with housemade flour tortillas, Chamoy char siu ribs (ribs in a Mexican sour plum sauce); pollo asado and green pineapple hot sauce (a whole roasted chicken brined in beer and citrus), and hominy and charred octopus. Lalo’s drinks program is designed by Anna Morris, formerly of Mission Chinese and El Rey, and the wine program is curated by Alex Alan of Freek’s Mill and Hotel Delmano.

On Sunday, November 20, from 1-3pm, head to the Lower East Side for Burger Merger East at Mission Cantina. LA’s Burgerlords will be hosting a collaborative pop-up alongside Supreme Burger featuring burgers, vegan burgers, snacks, and beer. All-you-can-eat, $45.

At Alex Stupak’s Empellón al Pastor, you can now get unlimited tacos, margaritas, house wine, and select draft beers for 1.5 hours, for $45 a person. That’s a pretty sweet deal, especially considering Empellón al Pastor’s tacos are among the best in New York City.
