While many of us reach for traditional sports drink products to hydrate and replenish our electrolytes after a serious sweat session, there’s actually a much healthier way to do so that uses simple staples already lying around in your kitchen.

“Electrolytes can come from a variety of minerals in your diet, including sodium, chloride, potassium, and calcium,” Noom dietician Jennifer Major Hartman told Swirled via email. “They help your body maintain a healthy fluid balance and play a role in nerve and muscle function, among many other things.” But sports drinks end up overloading our bodies with a lot of unnecessary sugar (not to mention artificial coloring). They’re also not the cheapest thing on supermarket shelves.

So regardless of whether you enjoy intense workouts throughout your week or just sweat a lot during the sweltering summer months, try this homemade electrolyte elixir recipe from Noom Coach, a mobile weight loss and health program, the next time you need a boost. Both your body and wallet will thank you.

Ingredients (for a 3-serving batch):

3 cups of cold water
1/3 cup of lemon juice (1 full lemon)
1/8 cup of lime juice (half of 1 lime)
2 teaspoons of your sweetener of choice (honey, maple syrup, stevia, etc.)
1/8 teaspoon of sea salt

Instructions:

Combine the lemon juice, lime juice, sweetener and salt in a pitcher. Then add the filtered water and ice, and stir it to mix thoroughly.

And if you want to jazz up the drink a little bit…

Add crushed mint leaves for a refreshing experience.

Throw 100 percent pomegranate juice in there for a fruity punch.

Squeeze in some fresh ginger juice for an extra tangy kick.

Try a splash of coconut water to enjoy all of the tropical vibes.

Happy hydrating!
