This Low-Cal Ice Cream Tastes Like The Real Deal

Emily Abrams

If you haven’t already read up on our extensive review of Halo Top’s luscious ice cream flavors, we suggest you settle in and take a gander. The ice cream has as low as 240 calories per pint and is packed with protein, so what’s there not to love? Oh, and it tastes amazing. But we’re not here to talk about Halo Top. There’s a new low-cal ice cream in town that’s delicious, and its name is Enlightened.

Upon learning about this new competitor, we were pumped to do another taste test. Enlightened has the same benefits as Halo Top — it’s low-calorie (though on average, Enlightened has slightly more calories per pint than Halo), low-fat, full of protein and fiber and boasts a yummy variety of flavors.

The chocolate peanut butter pint tasted identical to our favorite full-fat brand. The flavor wasn’t too sweet. It’s perfectly chocolatey with ribbons of peanut butter swirled throughout.

We loved Halo Top’s oatmeal cookie flavor, especially because of the cookie pieces interspersed throughout the ice cream. Enlightened’s version takes things to the next level by adding caramel. Though the calorie count is higher compared to its other pints, we loved that the brand didn’t skimp on flavor.

Ahhh, the infamous birthday cake flavor. We always find ourselves cringing before trying it because it can either be really good or really bad. You know what we mean.

Enlightened killed it. The ice cream was sweet, but not sickeningly sweet, the way birthday cake can be. We loved the sprinkles throughout the mix and the lightness of the cream. Our tastes had us wanting more.

The taste test was incredibly fun to be honest. It’s not common to find a low-cal, low-fat or low-sugar version of comfort food to be just as good — if not better —
than the original. But Enlightened hit the mark…and it hit the spot.

We had a few clear favorites, but we have to say that each pint was extremely smooth and ridiculously creamy for being low in fat.

Enlightened uses natural foods and flavors in their ice creams, including erythritol, which is a natural sweetener made from fruits that doesn’t spike your blood sugar.

While we stuck to the pints, Enlightened has a variety of other delicious products like ice cream bars and roasted broad bean chips.

A special thanks to Enlightened for sending the flavors over!
