Chipotle Adds Quinoa To Its Menu And We’re Intrigued
It was only a matter of time before Chipotle hopped on the healthy train. On Monday, the fast-casual Mexican food chain rolled out quinoa as a menu option at its New York City test kitchen location. The superfood could have you kicking cilantro rice to the curb.
According to Business Insider, red and gold quinoa gets tossed with citrus juice, cumin and freshly chopped cilantro. It can be added to any salad or entree as a substitute for rice.
Adding the ancient grain to the menu could be a whole new ball game for Chipotle. Quinoa packs in around twice as much protein as brown rice, plus it’s a complete protein and a superfood. It could allow Chipotle to appeal to a whole new demographic. Who knows how creative the fast-casual restaurant will get with quinoa. Quinoa tacos? Quinoa burritos? Once you cross that superfood threshold, there’s no going back.
In addition to the quinoa, Chipotle has rolled out other new menu items in the past year, including queso. If the quinoa is as successful at the queso, you could see the superfood on Chipotle menus across the country before you know it.
While Chipotle has been known for keeping things simple, the Mexican chain has been forced to adapt in the past few years after an E. coli outbreak in 2015. Taco Bell’s former CEO, Brian Niccol, has taken over as Chipotle’s new top executive, which means change is upon us.
