The Ultimate Walking Route Along Amsterdam’s Canals

A visit to Amsterdam is certain to be many things, but the first priority is likely getting the perfect view (and perfect photo) of the famed canals. We’ve plotted out a walking route that hits some of our favorite viewpoints in the city, from the tourist favorites to off-the-beaten-path spots. We suggest taking in the city on foot first, wandering to see some of these bike-filled bridges and flowery canals, but the best part might be the little alleyways and corners that call to you as you navigate the city to our favorite spots. Starting from the Amsterdam Royal Palace, make your way past the Red Light District and get ready for some breathtaking views.

Around The Main Canals

Groenburgwal

Just a short distance from the famous Red Light District, you’ll find Groenburgwal, a charming brick-lined street with small bridges and a quieter feel than the central squares.

Bloemenmarkt

Outside of tulip season, Amsterdam’s floating flower market isn’t as big of a draw as the big canal it sits in. The grand building and plethora of bikes give scale to the so-called Venice of the North.

Golden Bend

Amsterdam’s Golden Bend is a section of canals and residences that are exactly what you pictured when you dreamed of wandering the city. Every perspective is good here — you’ll have too much to look at.

Prinsengracht

The complex intersection here means you have a 360-degree view of some of the most extremely Amsterdam sights. Look for arching bridges and intricate rooftops and, of course, plenty of flowers lining the railings.

Leidsegracht

Charming Leidsegracht provides a view with bridge after bridge crossing the canals. Take your time wandering around these few blocks of Amsterdam. Every single step is a little bit magical.

Spiegelgracht

Spiegelgracht offers one of the best photo spots in the entire city. It’s a smaller canal so everything can fit in your shot and, depending on the light, you can photograph it from multiple angles to show off your time in the ‘dam.

Just Outside The Tourist Center

Magere Brug

The stately Magere Brug is lit up at night, but even during the day, it offers a great view of the wide canal. It’s called the “Skinny Bridge,” and it’s seriously satisfying to stand on such a tiny bridge above such a large canal.

Potgieterstraat

On the other side of the city in Amsterdam Oud-West, Potgieterstraat gives a more residential, normal-people glimpse into Amsterdam life. The street is filled with adorable cafes and restaurants, and it crosses a small but photogenic canal.

Near Jordaan

Blauwburgwal

Crossing over from the big touristy square, there’s a selection of three bridges that create the quintessential Amsterdam picture. If you’re hunting for the money shot, this is it.

Bloemgracht

It’s right in the middle of the Jordaan neighborhood (one of our Amsterdam favorites), and it’s perfect for the quaint wanderings of a late afternoon.

Brouwersgracht

Nearly as far north as you can get before hitting the ferry, you’ll find Brouwersgracht. It’s an almost fairytale-like intersection of two large canals with a sweeping building on the corner.
