Ancestry Teams Up With Spotify To Help You Discover Your ‘Musical DNA’
Have you ever wondered what your heritage would sound like if it were a song? Well, thanks to a new collaboration between Spotify and Ancestry, you no longer have to guess. Ancestry, the world’s largest for-profit genealogy company, teamed up with Spotify to determine your musical DNA based on your AncestryDNA test results.
Spotify and Ancestry’s new custom playlist generator lets you add the different ethnicities and regions that make up your heritage based on your AcestryDNA test results. It then selects an assortment of tracks that reflect the cultures that your ancestors came from. For example, someone with an Italian background might get Italian opera singers on their playlist, whereas someone with German heritage might get a playlist that includes songs from a German rap group.
Vineet Mehra, Ancestry’s executive vice president and chief marketing officer, hopes that the new tool will allow people to better connect to their heritage.
“How do you help people experience their culture and not just read about it? Music seemed like an obvious way to do that,” Mehra told Quartz in an interview.
If you aren’t one of the 10 million plus people who’ve already taken Ancestry’s DNA test, you’ll have to order the $99 at-home DNA testing kit and take the test to find out your heritage before you can make use of Spotify’s new playlist generator tool. Since the new tool launched on Thursday, September 21, a whopping 10,000 people have already signed up for a custom playlist. Will you be next?
