The Red Delicious Apple Is Losing Its Place As America’s Favorite

The Red Delicious apple has always ranked high on the list as far as apples go. They’re soft in texture (sometimes too soft) with a sweet and mellow flavor. They’re tough enough to cook with and they do the trick when it comes to snacking.

While Red Delicious apples continue to rank high up there, they’re about to be dethroned as America’s top produced apple and replaced by the Gala apple, which tends to be more on the juicy side with a crisper texture and more prominent sweetness.

The U.S. Apple Association predicts that the United States would grow 52.4 million Gala apples in 2018, which is a 5.9 percent jump from the previous year. Red Delicious, on the other hand, is expected to fall 10.7 percent to 51.7 million apples. Coming in third place is the Granny Smith apple (replacing the Fuji apple). The Honeycrisp apple (which in our opinion is the clear winner) is expected to make it into the top five for the first time this year.

There’s a time and a place for every apple. Some are better for snacking while others were practically designed for baking. With new apple varieties popping up, it makes sense that the Red Delicious apple might be past its prime. In our opinion, the juicier the apple, the better.
