Summer is the perfect time to up your intake of freshly squeezed juices. But with so many juice varieties to choose from, which one is best for your overall health? Pomegranate juice, although often overlooked, is at the top of our list when it comes to the health benefits it provides. Here’s what to expect from this insanely flavorful and nutritious juice.

What are the main benefits of drinking pomegranate juice?

Due to the presence of polyphenols in pomegranate seeds, pomegranate juice contains higher levels of antioxidants compared to most other fruit juices. The antioxidants in this juice can protect against free radical-induced cell damage and reduce inflammation. Believe it or not, pomegranate is a stronger antioxidant than red wine and is equal to green tea. Pomegranate juice has also been found to lower blood pressure and improve heart health. If you’re looking to up your intake of essential vitamins and minerals, drinking pomegranate juice can help. It’s filled with vitamins C, E, K and folate, as well as potassium.

Although the pomegranate fruit is typically in-season from October through January, you can still find pomegranate juice at your local grocery store year-round. When you’re shopping for the juice, make sure that you exclusively opt for varieties that are 100-percent pomegranate juice and not just fruit juice with added pomegranate. On average, a one-cup serving of bottled pomegranate juice provides 31 grams of sugar. Although this sugar is derived naturally from the pomegranate fruit, it can present a problem for those looking to cut back on sugar.
