Welcome to fairyland!

Zalipie, Poland is the most colorful village you’ve never heard of. Zalipie is a must-see for any folk art lover (or wannabe Instagram model). It’s only a quick drive from Krakow, making it an easy day trip from the historic city.

Every surface in this quaint little village is completely covered with handpainted flowers. Just take a look at this sunshine-y spot! The vivid artwork is almost dizzying.

The tiny village has been adorned in flowers since the 19th century, when furnaces changed to chimneys because of the industrial revolution.

Villagers painted kitchen stoves with bright colors to cover the traces of soot from the furnaces and liven up the interior of Zalipie homes.

The tradition spread outside and soon the entire town was covered in sweet bouquets.

And just like a real garden, the town grows a new collection of blooms each summer. Every year, local artists can compete in the annual painting festival (usually held mid-June).

The town is incredibly proud of its folksy reputation, with museums dedicated to the art form and signs welcoming you to their fever dream of flowers.

The level of detail is astounding. No home, church or farm is left undecorated. Even beehives receive the floral treatment.

And indoors, the townspeople keep up the motif.

Handcrafted lace, painted ceramics and embroidery ensure that everywhere you look is decked out in blossoms.

It’s already a budding Instagram favorite, so on your next trip to Eastern Europe, squeeze in a day trip from Krakow for an afternoon of photoshoots with every gorgeous mural in Zalipie.
