7/2/19 Newsletter: You Should Try Dry Brushing

If you’re ready to show off your silky summertime skin, give dry brushing a try. The treatment does take some time, but you can do it in the luxury of your bathroom. Using a long-handled brush with natural bristles, start at your feet and work all the way up. Brush in long, gentle strokes, always flowing toward your heart and being careful not to brush too hard or you’ll agitate sensitive skin. Shower as usual — you’ll wash away unwanted, dead skin cells — and be sure to moisturize thoroughly. Dry brushing is good for more than sloughing off dead skin cells — it may also increase blood circulation. [Swirled]

Life Hack Of The Day: Showerhead Edition

To get rid of residue and bacteria on your showerhead, tie a baggie with white vinegar around the nozzle with a rubber band. Soak it overnight. In the morning remove and wipe down, the showerhead will be good as new.

Health

It’s true — you do need a solid seven to eight hours of sleep each night. And not just because you get cranky if you don’t sleep enough, but sleep deprivation has been linked to health issues like cancer, diabetes, heart disease and more. And the sleep loss epidemic affects everything — studies have shown that just one night of four to five hours of sleep causes the natural killer cells in your body (the ones that attack malignancies like cancer) to drop by a dramatic 70 percent. Wow. Hopefully, some of you are headed to vacation this week, so it’s the perfect time to start implementing a better sleep pattern. [Swirled]

Career + Finance + Tech

The best way to feel (and be) protected is to invest in the right kinds of insurance. Number one is health insurance. Doctor appointments and prescriptions can get expensive if you pay out-of-pocket. Renters or homeowners insurance, disability insurance and life insurance round out the four kinds you should have starting in your 20s. Being an adult means you have a real responsibility to take care of yourself. For your peace of mind aim to have the above insurance so you’re always covered no matter the situation. [Swirled]

Food + Drink

If you want to sip in style this season, skip the rosé for a spritzer, according to Yelp’s data science team. Aperol spritz is at the top of the summery drinks, followed closely by runners-up spiked seltzer, Paloma and Negroni. Read on to see what’s the most popular drink in your area and what’s surprisingly seeing a decline in popularity. [Swirled]

Recipe Of The Day: Chilled bean thread salad is a delicious summertime dish, perfect for that next potluck or make-ahead dinner. And it’s all about adding as much flavor in the cooking liquid as possible. To start, gently simmer chicken, ginger and star anise for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, remove from the heat and let the chicken cook for an additional 8 to 12 minutes. Next, poach shrimp in the same liquid until pink. Combine vegetable oil, lime juice, carrot, fish sauce and shallots to create a dressing and set aside. Bring the poaching liquid to a boil one last time, add bean thread noodles and let steep until tender. To assemble, hand-shred the chicken and combine with chopped shrimp, noodles, sliced cucumber, fresh herbs and chiles to taste. [Food 52]

A quick tip from yours truly: Bean thread noodles are made from mung bean starch and water. They are also known as Chinese vermicelli, bean threads, crystal noodles and glass noodles. [The Spruce Eats]
