Looking to travel somewhere cool this year? You may have heard that certain days of the week are more likely to see flight deals than others. At the same time, “the worst day to travel” is worth knowing about. Mark your calendar and steer clear.

According to Cheapair, the most expensive day to travel this year is July 9. The average airfare — domestic and international — goes for $481, which is about $100 more than the average price for any other day in the summer.

So what’s behind the increased fares? There are a number of contributing factors — like traveling so close to July 4, a popular time to pack up your bags and go. July 4 falls on a Wednesday this year so it’s possible some people are taking an extra long holiday weekend.

Expedia and the Airlines Reporting Corporation have found that Sunday is the cheapest day of the week to book travel, but you should be wary of Sunday dates in July.

Bonus tip: Looking for the best deal? While you can expect more expensive airfare in July, which Cheapair identifies as the most expensive month of the year to travel, the website suggests Tuesday and Wednesday travel dates are the cheapest of the week in July.
