Health Tip of The Day: Working Out More While Cutting Calories Isn’t The Best Solution For Sustainable Weight Loss.

What Science Says: Adding extra workouts to your weekly regimen while also cutting calories might sound like a natural weight loss solution, but you may find that this tactic actually makes you gain weight. While this result is frustrating and counterintuitive, it can usually be attributed to a hormonal imbalance in your body. Exercise increases the body’s production of ghrelin, the hormone that’s responsible for making you feel hungry. Ghrelin is also responsible for slowing down your metabolism and storing fat for later use if you do not re-fuel your body with the appropriate amount of food after a tough workout.

As ghrelin increases, leptin, the hormone that’s responsible for inhibiting hunger when we’re full, decreases. When you don’t replenish your body with food after an intense workout you end up with this particular hormonal imbalance which convinces your body that it needs to store all available energy to prevent starvation, so it holds on to any existing body fat, causing frustrating weight gain despite your efforts.

Try This Instead: When you’re trying to lose weight, make sure that you’re giving your body the fuel it needs based on your activity level. This means always making sure that you’re eating pre- and post-workout meals. Shift your focus to the quality of the food that you’re eating instead of its caloric value. Eating balanced meals consisting of foods that are rich in nutrients and fiber while getting adequate exercise will help you lose weight in a healthier and more consistent way than skipping meals and cutting calories ever could.
