Chimney Cakes Are About To Take Over Your Instagram Feed
Kürtöskalács, or chimney cakes, aren’t just another food we’re eyeing up on Instagram. They’re so much more than that. And, with a history as rich as these cone-shaped pastries, you’ll wish you learned about them sooner.
The Hungarian pastry can be traced all the way back to Medieval times (around 1450). It’s made from sweet yeast dough that has been stretched into one long ribbon. It’s wrapped around a cone (to get its chimney-esque shape!) before being rolled in sugar, brushed with butter and roasted over charcoal. While it’s roasting, the sugar on the dough caramelizes and creates a crispy, shiny crust. YUM.
Traditional toppings don’t stray from ground or chopped walnuts, almonds, cinnamon powder and vanilla sugar. Modern toppings span a wider variety and include the likes of Nutella and ice cream.
If there were a lovechild between pull-apart bread and a donut, the chimney cake would be it. We’re dying to try one so we’re keeping our eyes peeled. Chimney cakes, we’re comin’ for ya.
