These Volcanic Trails Are The Hottest Hiking Destinations
Remember when you were a kid and would play lava tag? Well, these hikes take you across real-life lava fields to active volcanos around the world. Check out these nine volcano hiking trails for explosively exciting trekking.
Poas Volcano, Costa Rica
This volcano erupted so recently (August 2017) that its national park of the same name closed to visitors. But when it does open again, hikers can get super close to the violent volcano and beautiful volcanic lake.
Gunung Rinjani, Indonesia
This is Indonesia’s second tallest volcano and it’s a sacred place for both the Hindu and Sasak people. About 100,000 people tackle this mountain every year for the gorgeous views and exciting ash emissions.
Pacaya, Guatemala
Pacaya has erupted 23 times since 1565, the last big one being in the 1960s. But since then, the volcano has experienced frequent little explosions, and day trip hikers can get pretty close to the action.
Mount Etna, Italy
On the island of Sicily, this Italian volcano is one of the most active in the world. There are frequent eruptions of lava flows and fiery explosions.
Kilauea, Hawaii, U.S.
Another super active volcano, Hawaii’s Kilauea is almost constantly erupting, creating slow flows of lava, or sometimes quicker rivers of it (occasionally even on fire!).
Mount Nakadake, Japan
This is the best peak on Mount Aso (Japan’s most active volcano) and it has great views of the mountain’s caldera, a gorgeous volcanic lake.
Telica Volcano, Nicaragua
You can camp right next to the volcano’s crater. Yes, hikers can pitch a tent just about 650 feet from where lava once erupted. And if you look down into the crater, you can still spot fiery mini eruptions.
Mount Pinatubo, Philippines
Mount Pinatubo had the second-largest volcanic eruption of the last century and now visitors can see lava flows and the volcano’s crater lake.
