The Unique Way You Can Give Back Just By Using Your Voice

Most of us would love to volunteer but feel we don’t have the time to make a regular commitment. However, if you’re looking for a way to contribute to the greater good of society while accommodating your crazy schedule, we have a solution. It’s time to get acquainted with Vocal iD.

Vocal iD is a company that helps implement human voices into screen readers (for those who can’t read screens) and GPS navigation devices. But Vocal iD is most known for giving voices to vocal machines used by those who can’t use their own voice. Yes, just like the machine Stephen Hawking used for decades.

So, what makes the organization different from other companies doing the same thing? Vocal iD recognizes that most vocal machines utilize the same monotone voices that don’t sound human. What’s worse, many machines used aren’t even reflective of a patient’s age. (Imagine how ridiculous it would be for a 10-year-old boy to be using a voice that makes him sound like a 60-year-old man. Yeah.)

So, Vocal iD offers everyday people — like you and me — a chance to lend our voices to become part of someone’s vocal machine. The goal? To offer patients voices that sound like actual humans and voices that sound like them.

Here’s how you can get involved: Sign up on the Vocal iD website with your information and get your computer microphone ready. You’ll be prompted to record a few phrases as an “audition” (to make sure your voice is clear). Then, if your voice is accepted, you’ll get an email from Vocal iD prompting you to record more phrases. As you can imagine, the amount you could say is infinite, so you can do as much or as little as you’d like.

We have to admit — we’re pretty thrilled about this volunteer opportunity. It’s free and goes toward an excellent cause. The best part? You don’t even have to leave the house to get involved. Sign us up!
