Health tip of the day: Your adult acne could be caused by more than just hormonal changes. Other culprits could be a zinc deficiency, your partners’ beard and more.

Acne — we were promised that we’d get rid of it after our teenage years, but the sneaky skin problem followed us into adulthood. Acne is a skin condition that commonly occurs when our hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells, causing pimples or blackheads to appear on our faces, shoulders, chest and upper back (and other less common places). We’ve long been told that acne results from our hormones being out of whack. But we have more than just hormones to blame for those irritating (and often painful) red blemishes. Below are a few reasons you might be breaking out post-puberty.

1.You’re zinc deficient.

Zinc is an essential trace mineral that’s most commonly known for its role in the development and maintenance of a healthy immune system. Some studies have discovered a correlation between low zinc levels and acne. Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, zinc supplementation and topical-treatments are sometimes used to treat moderate-to-severe acne. Consider loading up on zinc naturally by eating more zinc-rich foods like seafood, poultry, meat, nuts and unrefined whole grains.

2.You work out with a full face of makeup.

Since your pores naturally open up when you sweat, wearing makeup while you exercise can cause buildup in your pores and lead them to clog, which will result in breakouts. When you’re running to a spin class after your nine to five, take a few minutes to wash your makeup off before hopping on the bike — your skin will thank you!

3.Your partner is rocking a solid beard.

If your partner sports a solid scruff and the two of you lock lips on the regular, it could be causing your breakouts (yes, way!). When your skin rubs against your partners’ scruff, it can become irritated, stimulating excess oil production which leads to breakouts. Read on for more surprising reasons you could be breaking out.
