You Need To See These UNESCO Heritage Sites Before They’re Ruined Forever

Every year, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) adds World Heritage Sites to a list of destinations in danger. This year there is a total of 54 places at risk due to climate change, deforestation, war or other human-caused forms of destruction.

While many sites are tragically threatened by war and therefore not able to be protected by the organization or accessible to visitors, there are many UNESCO locales you can still visit before they’re gone. Just remember to leave the space as you found it, a la footprints versus photographs. The old adage only goes so far — even footprints can be damaging if tourists venture off paths or stand on ancient stone walls to get a better snap. So be respectful. You want to allow other travelers to see these beautiful places, too.
