Here Are The Most Underrated Italian Destinations

@lanuovasardegna

Going on an Italian vacation? You may think it’s a no-brainer to spend all your time in Rome, Venice and Cinque Terre. What you may not know is that there are plenty of other Italian destinations that are just as special in their own way. Here are some underrated spots you should make room for on your trip:

1. Tellaro

One hour south of Cinque Terre by car, Tellaro has the same beautiful cliffside views as the former, more popular destination…but without all the tourists. You’ll have uninterrupted gawking time on the rocky peninsula, and that’s not all. You’re close enough to walk to the Montemarcello Magra Regional Natural Park, as well as to drive directly to Cinque Terre if you must see it.

2. Altamura

History buffs, you have to visit Altamura. What was once an ancient settlement from 5th to 3rd century BC, this town is rich in history and culture. Stroll through the many old cathedrals, including the famous Altamura Cathedral (which was built between 1232 and 1242) or just head to the Altamura museum to get a broad-range lesson on the city.

3. Sardinia

Looking for something totally tropical tans tourists? Sardinia is the perfect place to go. A small island located off the western coast of Italy, it has over 1,200 miles of sandy beaches to choose from, so you’ll never find yourself out of low-key options by the water. If you want to escape to the mountains, head to the Gennargentu Mountains and relax.

4. Modena

Foodies, rejoice. Modena is arguably one of the most legitimate destinations for food in Italy. If you caught the first season of “Chef’s Table,” you probably recognize Massimo Bottura’s Modena restaurant Osteria Francescana in the first episode, and for good reason. You can also indulge in the many art projects and museums around the city to gain a more cultural perspective of the northern Italian city.

5. Siracusa

Siracusa (Syracuse), which emerged in the Greek era, is known as the espresso capital of the world. Though often unnoticed compared to more popular nearby destinations like Catania, it should not be ignored. Pass by its World Heritage Site or read up on its biblical ties.
