When you think about visiting France, you probably think of the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame. We don’t blame you — it’s only natural for the mind to go to Paris. But maybe you should think outside the Arrondissements and to some more unconventional locations. These underrated destinations are, in our opinion, just as beautiful and exciting as the French capital.

If it’s gorgeous nearly-ancient cathedrals you’re seeking, Rouen is your place. Located in Normandy (in the northern part of France), Rouen is one of the country’s oldest towns. It’s been raided more times than history can count, but somehow its architecture has stayed in tact. Visit the old cathedrals, stroll on the cobblestone walkways and enjoy a laid back atmosphere.

Looking for a city that feels busy, but with a focus on food? Head to Lyon. The destination is the third largest French city with a gastronomic vibe, so you can expect killer meals. There’s a handful of Michelin-star restaurants that are guaranteed to blow you away. Oh, and of course it’s gorgeous.

Located near the Swiss border and close to Lyon, Megève is known for its incredible skiing opportunities. You’re guaranteed an incredible view of the French Alps as you enjoy your favorite winter activity. In the summer, you can walk among rolling hills and fields, and take in the insane scenery of the mountains.

One word: lavender. Avignon is the place to go if you’re looking for a destination both stunning in looks and in smell. On the northwestern edge of Provence, Avignon is a gothic town rich in medieval architecture in history. The location is like one major artifact, which you’ll love. And then you can run through the lavender fields. Day made.

The channel will be cold even in the summer, but if you dare to take a dip, you won’t be sorry. If you’re not interested in getting in the water, the view from the cliffs is enough to send you into French heaven.
