7 Underrated Beers You’ve Never Heard Of But Have To Try

@lhuxtable

You’re heading to the beer shop and you know you want something different than your typical Heineken — something good. You definitely don’t want to blow $10-15 on something new you’re not sure you’ll like. These underrated beers can be found anywhere in the U.S. And, you’ll probably like them more than your usual go-to. Take it from us: it’s good to *hop* outside the box (we know, we’re corny but w/e).

1. Anderson Valley Wild Turkey Bourbon Barrel Stout

Why It’s Good: You can expect a lot of flavor out of this stout — it has an oak and bourbon aroma with sweet notes of vanilla and caramel. The best part: the smoky aftertaste.

2. Sofie Belgian-Style Farmhouse Ale

Why It’s Good: This ale is spicy and citrus-ey with an aftertaste that reminds you of a fine-barrel-aged wine. Don’t ignore this one, it’s been hiding in your local beer shop all along.

3. Dogfish Head Piercing Pilsner

Why It’s Good: Dogfish head is gaining a serious following and, if you’re unsure of what to try, this smooth pilsner is the perfect choice. The beer has a fresh floral aroma and maltiness that makes it go down easy. Yet, it’s still light, crisp and slightly sweet. We’d go with this one on a hot summer night.

4. Westmalle Dubbel

Why It’s Good: This strong ale is sweet, rich and malt-heavy — great for colder nights. It’ll warm you up nicely with its plum- and raisin-like flavor. The yeast gives the comforting beer a nice kick.

5. Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. Torpedo Extra IPA

Why It’s Good: IPA lovers, you’re gonna love this one. This year-round beer gives you that extra hoppiness you crave while staying fairly heavy at 7.2 percent. Yep, you won’t need too many of these to start feeling it. Savor this one.

6. Thirsty Dog Wulver

Why It’s Good: If you appreciate a good aging process, you’ve found the one. This heavy ale is aged in bourbon barrels for eleven months, and the taste is very bourbon-ey. You’ll pick up an aroma of molasses and caramel with a burnt, caramelized sugar finish.

7. The Bruery White Oak, Smuttynose Wheat Wine

Why It’s Good: This is a true barleywine with a rich, boozy flavor that only Bruery can provide. There is a lot of wheat in the malt, which ferments the sugar in the aging process. The result: a nice slow-sipping beer that doesn’t overload you with heaviness.
