Toilet Water Beer Is A Thing And It’s Delicious

Would you drink toilet water beer? This is not a drill. One of the largest craft breweries in the U.S., the San Diego-based Stone Brewing, is paving their own way in the industry by becoming the first to make beer using water that “comes from the toilet.”

The new pale ale, Full Circle, is brewed with recycled water, thankfully not water directly from the toilet. The recycled water is sourced from the Pure Water San Diego demonstration plant, which is part of a bigger picture project to clean up enough wastewater to provide one-third of San Diego’s water supply. Steve Gonzalez, Senior Manager of Brewing, said, “Among the pale ales that I’ve made, it’s probably in the top three.”

Gonzalez wasn’t the only one praising the new creation. San Diego mayor Kevin Faulconer was a huge fan of the beer and said, “There’s no better way to highlight the purity of this water.” During the lengthy California drought, the COO of Stone Brewing, Pat Tiernan, told the Times of San Diego that they had a tough time rotating their water sources during the water shortage since each required a different processing method. Using wastewater has provided stability for the brewery and it looks like they are committed to this sustainability model.

Full Circle pale ale is said to be hoppy with some caramel and fruity notes and despite its questionable origins, it’s a clean-tasting beer. Stone Brewing has been called the “All-time Top Brewery on Planet Earth” by BeerAdvocate magazine, with other brewery locations in Virginia and Germany, and they are strong advocates for environmental responsibility.

Although the beer isn’t available to the public just yet, it should be on the market soon.
