This Underwater Workout Will Change How You Think Of Swimming

Gone are the days of simply swimming lap after lap solo in your favorite stroke style. This underwater workout is now getting a boutique makeover in Los Angeles. And the result? Something called SwimTeam.

These fitness classes combine short lap sets with low-impact strength exercises in the pool to create an effective total body workout in 45 minutes. No swimming expertise is necessary to reap the benefits.

SwimTeam participants also get to swim to music, listen to the coach’s cues and enjoy an extra boost of verbal encouragement via their state-of-the-art headphone technology. The waterproof Swimmersive™ headsets used in class fit comfortably under a swim cap and use bone conduction technology so you don’t have to shove wet earbuds into the sides of your head for the duration of class (phew, we were worried).

Some motivation behind the creation of this class is the fact that most other workouts we do accumulate significant wear and tear on our bodies. Swimming, on the other hand, can be a lifetime sport. It’s kind to aging joints and old injuries, and it can also serve as a method of moving meditation.

A 45-minute SwimTeam session will run you $30, and the company estimates you can burn between 400 and 800 calories each time you attend. Effectiveness aside, our favorite part is the floating savasana at the end. How much more tranquil can you get?

While SwimTeam currently only operates in a handful of California locations, it’s are looking to expand nationally over time. So if you think your local pool would be willing to partner with this trendy new company and you really want to give the workout a try, be a pal and make the introduction.
