This Surf And Turf Tartare Goes For $1,000 And It’s All Kinds Of Ridiculous

Benjamin Steakhouse Prime

You’ll find some pretty elaborate meals in New York City, but this surf and turf tartare might just be one of New York’s most expensive steak dishes yet. At Benjamin Steakhouse Prime, located in midtown Manhattan, Benjamin Restaurant Group Executive chef Jesus Nunez created a foie gras and caviar-topped steak tartare that plays off of the classic surf and turf. The dish goes for a casual $1,000.

The surf side of the dish starts with tuna toro and tuna belly and it’s topped with California gold uni, Alaskan King Crab, Oscietra Caviar, spicy XO sauce (a spicy Chinese seafood sauce) with Louis XIII Cognac and tiny edible flowers.

The turf side of the dish is a base of wagyu beef topped with seared A-grade foie gras, foie gras mousse and freshly shaved black and white truffles. It’s topped with a wine sauce made from Opus One wine — an average bottle goes for about $305 — white balsamic vinegar, gold leaf and microgreens. Yeah, you could say the tartare gets the royal treatment.

This surf and turf creation is so elaborate that it’s set to be featured on CNBC show “Secret Lives of the Super Rich.” The whole dish looks like something that should be in a museum, but you can dig into this work of art for around the price of your monthly rent.
