Super Mario Brothers-Themed Bar Draws Massive Crowds

It’s cool to indulge your nostalgic side every once in a while and the James Beard-nominated Mockingbird Hill, in D.C.’s Shaw neighborhood, wants to bring you back to simpler times with a Super Mario Brothers themed pop-up bar. It’s garnished with all things Nintendo.

Step into this 21 and up Mushroom Kingdom, and check out all of the animatronic piranha plants peering out of green pipes and light fixtures covered with glowing colorful mystery boxes. There’s even a festive corner in the back exclusively dedicated to Bowser (AKA King Kooper) who’s the main antagonist of the whole Mario franchise.

Senior bar manager Paul Taylor even changed up the cocktail menu to match the Super Mario Brothers theme with creations like “It’s A Me, Amario” (Don Ciccio & Figli Carcafio, sweet vermouth and spicy ginger ale), “I Call Yoshi!” (Midori, Chartreuse, cucumber melon, lemon and unfiltered sake), and the “King Koopa Cup” (lemon, “popcorn” tea, ginger syrup and Two James Johnny Smoking Gun Whiskey). The pop-up is open from now until April 15. Make sure to give yourself a little extra time since long lines are a given.

Connected through an open doorway is Southern Efficiency, a cherry blossom pop-up that’s an ode to Washington DC’s prime season. Here you’ll find handmade cherry blossom “branches,” tons of origami cranes and a mural print of artist Maggie O’Neill’s painting “Flynn’s Jefferson Memorial.”
