College Students Believe They Found The Ultimate Hangover Cure

Say hello to SunUp — an all natural powder created by two seniors at Yale University that is said to cure hangovers. The supplement is preventative, so you take it before going out. Now, who wouldn’t want that? Let’s be real, it sounds too good to be true.

Liam McClintock and Margaret Morse are the masterminds behind the new product that dissolves in water, along with the support of professors, nutritionists, and a pharmaceutical manufacturer.

SunUp works by addressing the four root causes of a hangover:

  • Acetaldehyde is a potent byproduct of alcohol that damages the body. Targeting the liver, the supplement increases enzymes that break down the chemical compound into less detrimental components.
  • SunUp aims to suppress overactivity of the immune system and inflammation that result from drinking.
  • Alcohol reduces glutamine, which is important for the health of our bodies. When glutamine levels “rebound,” sleep is often disturbed. SunUp functions as a balancing agent in this capacity.
  • SunUp infuses the body with nutrients to counteract depleted vitamins and electrolytes from drinking.”We are passionate about ending hangovers and increasing productivity,” the team says on Indiegogo, an international crowdfunding website, where they’re pursuing funding for SunUp. (With eight days left in their campaign, they raised nearly $35,000, which amounts to 174 percent of their $20,000 goal.)

“According to the CDC [Center for Disease Control and Prevention], hangovers cost the U.S. over $200 billion annually in lost productivity,” McClintock explains. “So why hasn’t science solved this problem?” He says he’s tried “magic hangover” cures with no luck, which motivated him and Morse to find a solution backed by research.

Morse elaborates, “The different ingredients in the formula have each undergone independent studies showing that they increase the rate of alcohol clearance and act as a defense against alcohol toxicity. But they’ve never been combined into one supplement.”
