Idaho, Land Of Potatoes, Is America’s Hottest New Wine Destination

@kristoferbarber

Bordeaux, Tuscany and Napa are so passe. Sommelier circles are all abuzz about the next great wine destination. The verdict? Idaho.

Yes, that is correct. The state most famous for growing potatoes is actually home to an award-winning wine valley.

The Snake River Valley boasts more than 50 vineyards, with heavy emphasis placed on sustainable, organic practices. You’ll find winemakers growing Syrah, Cabernet, Riesling and Chardonnay grapes, and since property costs are lower than in more popular winery regions like Napa or Oregon’s Willamette Valley, business is booming.

Hat Ranch Winery’s dry Moscato has won best in show awards in Idaho for several years running, but there are plenty of other varieties worth a try. Looking for a nice Syrah? The oldest winery in town, Ste Chapelle, has an award-winning vintage. Searching for something a little more unique? Strange Folk Wines sells its wine in cans covered in cool graphic art.

The nearest town to the Snake River Valley is Caldwell, which is just 27 miles from Idaho’s capital. That’s Boise, if you’re ready to surf flight options into the area. And we don’t blame you one bit if you want to book a trip. We also want to sample some of these underrated wines – especially while it’s still a bargain for a bottle.
