5 Destinations Where Hostels Aren’t Going To Be A Super Affordable Option

We keep hostels in our back pocket when traveling for when we need a place to stay with cool fellow travelers, decent WiFi and a cheap price. But there are some spots around the world where they’re getting pretty damn pricey. You might be better off in an Airbnb, couch-surfing or even booking a traditional hotel. Or you might have to up your budget allotment. Some places are just hella expensive right now — to the point where even hostels are feeling the inflating prices.

If you’re counting on spending less than $30 a night on lodging, you might want to think twice about just booking a hostel on a whim in these five cities.

1. Reykjavik, Iceland

During the summer, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a hostel in Reykjavik for less than $45. Blame all your fellow Iceland-bound travelers because space in the fairly small city is at a premium. But you can find more affordable Airbnbs or at least similarly priced spots.

2. Dubrovnik, Croatia

We’ll be honest — the most expensive hostel we’ve ever booked was in Dubrovnik. But there aren’t a lot of options in the paradisical destination. It’s truly beautiful and it also happens to be one of the places where everyone wants to visit right now. We can’t outright recommend spending $50 or more on a hostel, but we also get it if you do.

3. Paris, France

Paris is pricey, mes amis. Unfortunately, the City of Lights can charge however much they want for just about any room and someone will pay that price. Therefore, your hostel search could inch toward $40 to $50 during the summer. Airbnbs are cheaper, although there’s a lot of controversy in Paris and potential legislation that could limit your options. The good news? Paris hostels are pretty luxe for what you pay.

4. Oslo, Norway

There just aren’t that many hostels in Oslo. The ones that do exist (and don’t have mediocre to icky reviews on various rating sites) are costly. Expect $30 at the cheapest, but the nicer ones are closer to $50. Otherwise, try Airbnb. You’ll get a lot more for your 50 bucks.

5. Venice, Italy

If you want to be located inside the actual city of Venice, you’re gonna be paying for it. We’ve seen prices from $40 all the way up to $100. It’s rough, but you will get to wander out of your hostel in the morning straight onto the famous canals.
