Just So We’re Clear, Chicken Sashimi Is Gross AF
Maybe we’re sheltered, but we don’t think raw chicken should ever be eaten by humans. Apparently though, there are restaurants exploring chicken sashimi and saying it’s safe because of how they source the meat. That said, we just want to let you know where we stand. It’s a solid no.
If you want to really dig into it, you could argue that raw fish with high levels of mercury and warm steak tartare, which isn’t without health concerns, are just as questionable to consume. But we’re not on board with that (sushi is cool in our book). Eating any raw meat in general comes with some risk, especially depending on how it’s handled, but chicken seems like it’d be the riskiest.
The risk factors are a-plenty, and we’re sure you figured salmonella is among the top concerns, but consuming raw chicken puts you at risk for a number of pathogens like:
- Enterococcus
- Escherichia coli
- Campylobacter jejuni
- Staphylococcus aureus
- Salmonella
- Listeria monocytogenes
You can disagree with us on this one, but we’re just going to say that chicken sashimi sounds totally gross. Health risks aside, we can’t imagine the texture is too appealing. That’s just us, though.
Just know the potential risks before you dig in, guys. If you do decide to try it, do us a solid and count us out.
