Pink Pineapples Exist, But We’d Never Eat Them

@hipvoordehab

Whenever the next Insta-worthy trend hits, you know we’re all over it. So of course, when we found out that pink pineapples exist, we just had to say something. Though they’re new to the world, they’ve already created conversation on social media. It’s safe to say that the pink pineapple trend is in full swing.

Purewow reports that the pretty fruit, which has been in development for over 12 years, is now being sold by big-name companies like Dole and Del Monte. The FDA approved them, though they’re still being labeled as genetically modified (obviously).

So how did they get so…pink? Researchers studied a pineapple’s enzyme levels, then lowered them. They specifically targeted enzymes that produce lycopene, which is the pink pigment behind produce like tomatoes and watermelons.

Though they’re FDA-approved and “safe to consume,” we’re not really into eating the not organic pineapple, but they’d be a gorgeous display at our next summer shindig.
