Here’s Why You Should Order From The Kid’s Menu

Going out to eat or ordering in food often means spending a solid amount of money, eating a huge portion and dealing with leftovers. Hitting up Seamless is definitely a good time, but there’s a genius way to beat the system to enjoy the experience even more. Interested in spending less money, eating more normal portions and being able to try more than one dish? We have a tip for you: order from the kid’s menu.

Before we get into the reasons why ordering from the kid’s menu is awesome, we’ll mention that this tactic doesn’t work everywhere, and some restaurants have an age limit. You’ll likely find that ordering online is the easiest way to swing it. (Think about it — no one can check your age online!) Here are five ways you can score by ordering from the kid’s menu:

1. You save money.

It’s no surprise that a child’s portion of food costs less money because the portion of a dish is smaller than it’s regular menu counterpart. If you’re not really interested in taking leftovers home and you don’t want to waste food, a child-size portion is the way to go.

2. You get a more normal-sized portion of food.

In an interview with Business Insider, Peter Singer, professor of bioethics at Princeton University and author of Practical Ethics says, “I think for many people, American restaurants give overly large portions.” A child’s portion of pasta, for example, may actually be the healthier-sized portion for an adult to consume than the regular portion. We can speak directly to this, since we order Moe’s children’s meals on the reg and the chain’s burritos are more than enough to fill us.

3. You can treat children’s menu items like small plates.

What’s better than trying one dish? Trying multiple. Ask for a few children’s menu items, and you can try more than one dish without ordering full-size meals that you might end up throwing out later.

4. The kid’s menu sometimes offers options not available on the regular menu.

It’s not super common, but sometimes you can find something interesting on the kid’s menu that just isn’t offered on the regular menu. For example, adults can’t order quesadillas at Chipotle, but the item is featured on the kid’s menu. Boo-yah!

5. You have room for dessert (or it’s included).

When you go out to eat, you typically expect to eat a little more indulgently than you would if you were cooking at home. If you want to live it up without totally trashing your health, you can order a child-sized portion of food and order dessert. Some restaurants, like Moe’s or Panera Bread, even include a sweet treat with a kid’s meal.
