There’s An Entirely New Way To Consume Water That Doesn’t Involve Drinking It
Deep down we all want to recycle, but the reality is, until we find a sustainable way to consume H20, our planet will continue to pay the consequences. Luckily, there are scientists who want to find a solution. The Skipping Rocks Lab, an innovative sustainable packaging start-up based in London, has created a mini globe filled with water that could potentially replace bottled water.
Here in 2017, bottled water has become so ingrained in our daily routines that it’s hard to imagine life without it. This new form of H20 is called Ooho. The packaging is made from plants and seaweed extract and it’s completely edible and biodegradable (within four to six weeks, similar to a piece of fruit). Ooho is fresh, with a shelf life of only a few days and it omits five times less CO2 than bottled water. It’s also cheaper than plastic, which makes the innovation a no-brainer. You can eat the globes whole or rip them open and take a few quick sips from the grape-sized pouch whenever you feel dehydrated.
Research by the Beverage Marketing Corporation shows that in 2014, the U.S. bottled water market, in terms of volume and producer revenues, was around $13 million. That’s a significant rise in revenue from the $12.3 million in 2013. It’s crazy to think that until 1767, bottled water didn’t exist. Jackson’s Spa released the first bottled water with the idea that the water from mineral springs had therapeutic properties and bathing in it and drinking it could help treat many common ailments. It wasn’t until 1977 that the first commercial for bottled sparkling water aired and convinced Americans that they should pay for their H2O.
If you’re on board with Ooho like we are, there’s a crowdfunding page where you can contribute. YAY FOR SCIENCE!
