The Animal Crackers Box Got A Makeover, And For A Good Reason

new animal crackers design

It’s been a long time coming, but after more than a century, the animals 0n the front of the iconic Barnum’s Animals Crackers box are now free to roam. Up until now, the animals — including lions, polar bears, gorillas and elephants — on the front of the box of crackers were caged in a circus boxcar.

But PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) finally convinced Nabisco to change the image. The animals are now shown roaming free in their natural habitat. The snack box redesign follows the celebrated shutdown of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus back in 2017.

The iconic box still has the same lettering and red and yellow branding, except now the there’s a cage-free pack of animals on the front including a much more healthy looking zebra, elephant, lion, giraffe and gorilla.

PETA has spent decades protesting the use of animals in circuses and asking for a more humane design on the front of the children’s snack. The more humane package design will hopefully inspire a new generation of animal cracker lovers moving forward.
