You Can Explore London’s Secret Underground Railway

There’s a zillion tours of London that will parade you around Buckingham Palace and Big Ben. The experiences are worth it if you’ve never been to the incredible city. But there’s something awesome that’s under tourists’ radar. You can take an underground tour of the London Postal Museum’s Mail Rail, which is a century-old abandoned tunnel system.

Before you even get the chance to say that sounds soooo boring, just look at this:

Impressed?

Travel and Leisure reports that the Postal Museum is opening to the public on July 28. Its main attraction, the Mail Rail, was the first driverless and electric railway system in the world, according to the museum’s website. You’ll be able to ride on a guided tour through the tunnels, which are 6.5 miles long and 70 feet underground.

History buffs can geek out on this tour. Since the tunnels are over 100 years old, the stories behind the system are endless. These are the same tracks that helped hide important works of art from the National Portrait Gallery during World War I. Crazy, right?

Once you’re off the ride, you’ll be able to walk through the Postal Museum itself, learning all about the building and the use of the tunnel system. Tickets start at £16, or approximately $20, for a 15-minute ride.

If you’re looking for an unconventional tour rich with history, the Postal Museum is it. You’ve got to check it out.
