The Last Word: Hardware Store Or Speakeasy?

[tw-divider]The Scoop[/tw-divider]

  • Astoria scored a craft cocktail destination, The Last Word — Queens-native Tommy Demaras (Maielle in Long Island City) and Padraig O’Brien (The Raines Law Room) have joined forces to open a speakeasy concept, cleverly disguised as an unassuming hardware store, along Ditmars Boulevard
  • Stemming from the Prohibition era gin-based cocktail The Last Word, this new neighborhood lounge (across from MP Taverna) has 1920s salon-style seating behind the red velvet curtains that mark the entrance way. Hand-crafted cocktails fall into three categories: Easy Drinking, Feeling Adventurous, and You Know Your Spirits
  • Beverage director/co-owner Padraig O’Brien and head bartender Ciaran Wiese are shaking up creations like the Rabble Rhouser (rhum agricole, housemade raspberry syrup, Dolin Blanc, rhubarb, and fresh lemon), and the Mumbai Daiquiri (white rum, curry syrup, lime, and rose water) — while you’re experimenting with the “Feeling Adventurous” portion of the menu, order some charcuterie, cheese, and other light bites

While you can’t actually buy power tools or a socket wrench from The Last Word, the storefront pays homage to the iconic Square Hardware store that was a staple of the Astoria community for over 50 years. The Last Word operates on a first-come, first-served basis but accepts reservations for parties of eight or more (email [email protected])
