Lagom Is The Latest Lifestyle Trend You Need To Know About

Have we finally reached a point where the “cool” thing is actually something we need in our lives? Amazingly, all signs are pointing to yes — why yes, we have.

Lagom (lah-gohm) is a Swedish word meaning “not too much, not too little, just the right amount,” and it encapsulates a lot of the ways we’ve shifted our thinking here in the United States over the past few years. We have finally reached a place where we believe we can lead responsible, balanced and rewarding lives by giving and taking all things in moderation.

Moderation… where have we heard that word before? When it comes to your diet, consume all things in moderation and you’ll be just fine. When it comes to exercise, only a moderate amount of strength, endurance and flexibility training will get your body where it needs to go (as opposed to overdoing one category). When it comes to material possessions, purchase the things you need to live comfortably and ditch the rest of the shopping bags. We could go on, but we think we’ve made our point.

Many folks are suggesting that lagom is replacing hygge as the buzz-worthy way to live, but we think it simply comes down to more people having the self-awareness to look inside themselves and distinguish want from need, and then using their common sense to utilize this information. The national pursuit of balance (with work, life, family, everything) is in full force. Phew. Finally, we’re starting to get it.

Hopefully, taking only what we need to live the lives we want continues to bring us all so much joy and satisfaction that we keep lagom in our national vocabulary long after 2017 comes to a close. After all, this trend can easily transform into a sustainable lifestyle if we will it to be.
