You Can Buy This Previously-Banned European Chocolate In The U.S.

In case you weren’t aware, in the U.S. we have beenĀ barred from consuming one of the best European chocolates to have ever blessed this earth…until now. We’re talking about Kinder eggs, formally known as Kinder Joy, and guess what? They’re back stateside! Yes, our year has been made.

Not familiar with Kinder Joy? These chocolate eggs, which hold a toy surprise in one half of the chocolate shell and two wafer balls sitting in chocolate cream on the other side, are intensely popular in Europe. The Kinder brand, owned by Ferrero, is becoming popular in the U.S. as well.

The candy was banned from being sold in the U.S. for the same reason that Wonderball (that chocolatey heaven from our childhoods) was at one point banned. The toy inside was considered a choking hazard, so it was removed from all U.S. stores in the ’70s under theĀ 1938 Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act. Basically, kids were choking on the toy inside the chocolate. Fair enough.

But…now the delicious treat is back! Delish reports that the chocolate candies are on shelves in the U.S. as of this week. Starting at $1.34 a pop, the candies will be sold nationwide at stores like Walmart and at local retailers.

We spotted these babies at our corner store today, so we’re pretty psyched to devour them.

Give a warm welcome to one of Kinder’s most popular chocolates ever. We can finally call the Kinder Joy egg ours. Just make sure not to eat the chocolate candy in one bite…
